Nick in O Magazine!

Is there no end to the number of people who are getting to know "our" Nick? His wife and he are in O magazine about their new book, "Half the Sky." Check it out. Can you think of ways we can make a difference? Do you agree that women are the key to progress in underdeveloped countries?

  1. I think your second question is similar to the one about female leaders making the world a better place--empowering women IS a hugely important factor, not because women inherently make better choices than men (that said, I keep thinking of a program we talked about in Conflicts--I don't remember which country it was in--but it gave women direct access to money through a debit card, rather than paying their husbands in cash, which was easily spent on alcohol before it got home), but because by only empowering men, you're missing out on the ingenuity and resourcefulness of half the population. Will every woman, given the power to make her life or her family's lives better use it wisely? No. But some (many?) will--and it's important to give them the chance (and the access to resources) to do so, especially if the traditional culture limits that chance.

Just to throw another organization out there--remember Wangari Maathai and her Green Belt Movement? Empowering women by planting trees.

There's actually an article by Hilary Clinton (from her recent trip) on the Green Belt site about empowering women as the key to progress in underdeveloped countries. Here's the link:
